Let us spill the beans on the amazing benefits of creating your own natural lip balm versus purchasing one off the shelf. Trust us, it’s not just about being a crafting wizard (although that’s pretty cool too).

First off, let’s talk about chemical-free beauty products. When you make your own natural lip balm, you have complete control over the ingredients that go into it. No more worrying about unpronounceable chemicals or hidden toxins lurking in your lip care routine. With this DIY lip balm tutorial, you can handpick natural, organic, and cruelty-free ingredients, giving your pout the love it deserves.

Now, let’s talk about the cost-saving benefits. We all know how those fancy lip balm brands can put a dent in our wallets. But fear not, savvy shoppers! When you make your own lip balm, you not only save money but also get more bang for your buck. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create multiple lip balms, perfect for gift-giving or keeping your own collection well-stocked.

Last but certainly not least, the satisfaction of crafting your own lip balm is incomparable. Picture this: you, in your cozy kitchen, mixing and melting ingredients with joy and anticipation. The aroma of natural oils filling the air, and the sense of accomplishment as you pour the velvety-smooth mixture into those cute little lip balm tubes. It’s a DIY project that nourishes not only your lips but also your soul.

Before we dive into the exciting process of making lip balm, let’s make sure we have all the necessary ingredients and equipment. Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients

  • Beeswax Pellets or Grated Beeswax (get it here)
  • Shea Butter (get it here)
  • Castor Oil (get it here)
  • Avocado Oil (get it here)
  • Essential oils (optional) – a few drops for fragrance (e.g., peppermint, lavender, or orange)

Equipment

  • Double Boiler (or a pot for water, and a heat-resistant bowl or measuring cup)
  • Digital Scale (this is the one I use, pictured below)
  • Spatula
  • Plastic cup (for weighing out ingredients seperately)
  • Empty Lip Balm Tubes, or Metal Tins (Tubes, pictured below. Or these super cute metal tins)

With our ingredients gathered, it’s now time to measure and melt the butters and oils to create the base for our lip balm. Follow these steps:

Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and place it on the stove over medium heat. You don’t want the water to actually boil, a gentle simmer is best.

Place the heat-resistant measuring cup or bowl containing the measured ingredients into the saucepan, creating a makeshift double boiler. Or you can use an actual double boiler, if you’re so inclined.

Allow to melt slowly, stirring occasionally until fully liquified.

Now that our butters are melted, let’s add the oils to enhance the moisturizing properties of our lip balm.

Weigh the Avocado Oil and Castor Oil, and add to the melted butters. Stir gently until fully incorporated.

If you want to add fragrance, now is the time to do it. Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil(s) to the melted mixture and stir well.

It’s time to give your lip balm a proper home!

Take your lip balm tubes or small containers and line them up on a clean, flat surface. I like to use the Lip Balm Tray (pictured below, and available here). But if you don’t have that, I suggest securing your empty tubes together with a rubberband, otherwise they tend to fall over when filling.

Slowly pour the melted lip balm mixture into each tube, filling them up to just below the rim.

Be careful not to overfill, as the lip balm needs room to settle and solidify.

Once the lip balm has cooled and solidified, place the caps or lids on the tubes or containers. Wipe off any excess lip balm around the rims for a neat finish. Consider adding labels or stickers to personalize and decorate your lip balm tubes or containers. Store your finished lip balms in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Instructions

Prepare

  1. Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and place it on the stove over medium heat. Your water should be simmering, not boiling, when you're ready to start melting.

Measure and Melt

  1. Using your digital scale, weigh out your Beeswax and Shea Butter, and add them to your heat-resistant glass bowl or measuring cup.
  2. Place your measuring cup or bowl in the simmering water to start the melting process.
  3. Next, weigh out the Avocado Oil and Castor Oil, and set aside.
  4. Stir the Beeswax and Shea Butter mixture occasionally until all the ingredients have melted and combined thoroughly.
  5. Add your liquid oils once the hard butters are melted

    Add Fragrance

    1. If you want to add fragrance, now is the time to do it. Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil(s) to the melted mixture and stir well.
    2. Stir the mixture gently but thoroughly to ensure the oils are evenly distributed.

    Pour

    1. Take your lip balm tubes or small containers and line them up on a clean, flat surface.
    2. Slowly pour the melted lip balm mixture into each tube, filling them up to just below the rim.
    3. Be careful not to overfill, as the lip balm needs room to settle and solidify.

    Package

    1. Once the lip balm has cooled and solidified, place the caps or lids on the tubes or containers.
    2. Wipe off any excess lip balm around the rims for a neat finish.
    3. Consider adding labels or stickers to personalize and decorate your lip balm tubes or containers.
    4. Store your finished lip balms in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

    Notes

The final product is a soft lip balm, probably more suitable for metal tins. This recipe can, of course, be adjusted. Add more Beeswax if you prefer a firmer lip balm. You can even add a bit of your favorite lipstick for a pop of color (add it to the butters).
